CRITICAL DANCE
A mild form of calculated insanity
May 2015, Jerry Hochman

Conceived as a movement-centered theatrical piece, REPLACEMENT PLACE unites four performers in a space where personal journey and transformation transpire in real time. The piece is inspired by Noworol’s longtime interest in the
Jungian concepts of subconscious and “shadow” and fascination with art as means of exorcising personal demons. The stage becomes both an actual and metaphorical place where dance, music, stage design and text serve as means to investigate self-discovery. The work emerged in close collaboration with dancers of diverse backgrounds, expressions and styles (Sleep No More’s Troy Ogilvie and Nick Bruder and Flex virtuoso AJ “The Animal” Jonez) and composer/electro-cellist Chris Lancaster. A highly emotional narrative of memory, change, loss, discovery and fulfillment, REPLACEMENT PLACE melds passion, vulnerability, sardonic humor and pop culture with a pinch of Beckettian existentialism.
